Heres why you should stop looking for a mentor

Here's the reason you should quit searching for a coach Here's the reason you should quit searching for a tutor Will you be my mentor? This question causes me to recoil. It isn't so much that I would prefer not to help. I do - I truly do. It's simply that when somebody requests that I be their tutor, I don't have the foggiest idea what I'm pursuing. The inquiry feels like a proposition to be engaged from somebody I've never met, an inconclusive work contract with undefined terms of administration, and a goliath heap of obligation on an effectively full plate. But I comprehend where individuals are coming from. We've been coddled the possibility that finding a coach is an essential for progress. Endless business books and self improvement guides lecture the significance of a decent tutor. Under this picture we have supported, a guide encourages a mentee, similar to Socrates and Plato, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, and Mr. Miyagi and Daniel. The relationship at that point blooms, and the mentee accomplishes philosophical enormity, makes billions, or wins the All Valley Karate Championship.I hate to be a buzzkill, however this isn't the way things work, in actuality. We trust that a decent coach will show up like a prophet, whisk us from our gorge of misery, and push us up the stepping stool of progress. However, that tutor frequently doesn't come, at any rate not in the structure that we're anticipating. We at that point blame the absence of a coach for not getting started. The answer for this problem shows up in a scene in Good Will Hunting, one of my preferred motion pictures. In the scene, Sean McGuire, the advisor played by Robin Williams, asks Matt Damon's virtuoso character, Will Hunting, on the off chance that he has a perfect partner somebody who challenges him. After some wandering, Will answers: I got bounty. Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Frost, O'Connor, Kant, Pope, Locke. Sean ridicules this answer: That is extraordinary. They're all dead. Undeterred, Will says: Not to me, they're not. Will is on to something. We accept our perfect partners and wellsprings of motivation must be genuine guides who are a snappy call or an email away. Be that as it may, that supposition that is bogus. As Elizabeth Gilbert composes, coaches live on the racks of your library; they live on the dividers of historical centers; they live in chronicles made decades ago.No one has shown me more vote based system than the Czech essayist and government official Vaclav Havel. He's not alive. Nobody has shown me more composition than Stephen King. I've never met him. Nobody has shown me more modesty than the Roman ruler Marcus Aurelius. He's been treating daffodils for almost 2,000 years. Nobody has motivated me more about utilizing disappointment for progress than Sara Blakely. I saw her on the TV program Billions once, however our ways have never crossed. All I needed to do to gain from these fantastic individuals, and numerous others like them, was to examine their lives. Take, for instance, Stephen King. I treat his fiction like a course book. I feature, underline, circle, an d audit. I've gained more from contemplating his composition than I ever could from a formal coaching meeting where I would inquire as to whether he has any guidance on keeping in touch with (which he would presumably react, Go read my books.).You can channel the intensity of these educators without holding a seance. Pick your preferred wellspring of motivation and pose yourself this inquiry: What might they do on the off chance that they were from my perspective? What might Elon Musk do when confronted with this test? How might Elizabeth Gilbert tackle this inventiveness issue? How might Jane Austen build up the character in my novel? In the event that you've gotten your work done, and contemplated their works, you'll realize what the appropriate response is.So, to those of you searching for genuine tutors, I state, stop looking.Your coaches are as of now all around you.You simply need to make you fully aware of see them.Ozan Varol is a scientific genius turned law educator and top of the line author. Do You Pay Attention to Local Demographics When Working in HR - Workology

Do You Pay Attention to Local Demographics When Working in HR - Workology Local populations I know most of us pay cursory attention to demographics, at least the one for the US population, or if you are out of the US you probably pay attention to your country, but what about more locally? Do you have any idea of the demographics of the local area from which you may draw your employees? Perhaps you should. Local populations While reading an article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (and I have no idea why I was reading something from Pittsburgh) I started thinking about how important it is for someone in HR to be aware of local demographics as opposed to national trends. The article, New trends in aging demographics hit Allegheny County by Gary Rotstein, pointed out that this area had an older population than the country as a whole.   Rothstein said “Allegheny County has spent the past half-century with a greater share of elderly residents than is common nationally, and that local distinction is projected to hold true for another 25 years.” However, he said there are two subtler trends that those numbers don’t show. These are: After nearly two decades in which the number and percentage of people 65 and older here has been declining, that trend has bottomed out, and the older population will be quickly growing in the years ahead, though not as much as in the nation as a whole. The people most in need of services, those 85 and older, have ceased being the fastest-growing part of the county’s population. Their number is projected to reach an all-time high next year before declining for the next decade. My point is not these trends, though if I were in charge of HR for a hospital or elder care services these numbers might drive my staffing planning, my point is that this is the kind of level that you need to dig to in order to be prepared for the future of you company. What should you be paying attention to? There are a number of things you should be paying attention to in HR as far as demographics. Here are just some of them: Age cohorts- How many seniors, remembering that nearly 1 in 3 of adults in their late 60s are still in the workforce today; it was fewer than 1 in 5 three decades ago. Do you rely on seniors for your workforce? Should you? Graduation rates: If you rely on an educated workforce do you know the graduation rate for high school students in your area? How many go off to college? Furthermore, what is the return rate for those students? Not everyone wants to come back and work in the local businesses. If they are not coming back where are you going to get your talent in the future? Diversity of the community- Is the makeup of your community changing? Do you have increasing numbers of minority populations that may become your talent base? Are you prepared to deal with this? Do you know what appeals to these groups in order to better recruit them? These three things are just some of the things you need to pay attention to NOW in order to be better prepared for the future. Sources of information There are a number of sources that can provide you with this information. The primary source is The US Census bureau. Other sources will include your local Chamber of Commerce or your state agencies. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} I would recommend you start browsing some of these figures and start thinking about what is important to you in your HR planning. It may be eye opening and save you some trouble in the future. Image courtesy of emptyglass at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Exactly how to Cold Call a Company for a Job (Perfect template Included)

Exactly how to Cold Call a Company for a Job (Perfect template Included) Sending a resume or application to an employer can only achieve so much. At some point, job seekers need to be proactive and initiate contact with those employers. One of the most obvious ways to do that is with a simple phone call. Unfortunately, far too many job-seekers are reluctant to call a stranger to ask about possible job openings. For many, that cold call may seem like an unwelcome intrusion. In fact, some job-seekers assume that cold calling could reduce their chances of getting a job. Fortunately, the opposite is true. Why Cold Calling for Jobs Works Its hard to land a job. The fact is that employers take note of candidates who have initiative and drive. After all, those are highly-prized qualities that most companies look for in potential employees. By making that cold call, you can show an employer that you’re driven, assertive, and prone to getting things done. At the same time, you can achieve your goal of showcasing your skills â€" possibly even before your resume is read. (We wrote a good post here on how to cold email for a job) Of course, none of that will matter if your cold call is made without a concrete plan. In this post, we’ll explain how to cold call for a job and provide tips to help you receive the best results from that call. Tips for Your Job Search Cold Call The following tips can help you organize your cold calling for maximum results: Cold Call After Sending Your Resume It’s wise to send a copy of your resume and cover letter to the employer before you call. Include a line in the cover letter letting the decision-maker know that you’ll be following up by phone. Then, when you do call, you can tell the receptionist and decision-maker that you’re following up on a letter. Hopefully, the company will have already reviewed your qualifications. If not, then the cold call could provide a great opportunity to spark their interest. Make Sure You’re Calling the Right person Don’t just call without a plan. Take time to research the company and get the right name to call. As a rule, you are better off contacting managers than human resources personnel, so try to find the name of the appropriate department head. If possible, reach out to your network to find someone who can help you obtain a referral. That could provide you with an immediate way to garner interest during your call. Remember that Persistence Pays Off Be prepared to make several calls. You will likely be forced to leave voice mails and may only occasionally reach a live person on the first attempt. Leave messages for a callback but let the decision-maker know that you will follow up by phone. Finally, try to wait five to seven days before calling again, and limit yourself to no more than three or four cold call attempts per employer. Why? Well, if they’re ignoring you after receiving your resume and three or four phone calls, chances are they’re either not hiring or simply aren’t interested in talking to you. Move on. That’s why it’s important to cold call several employers a day. When you’re searching for a job, that cold calling routine will broader your job search net and maximize your chances of catching someone’s interest. It will also help to ensure that your cold calling skills are developed and maintained throughout your search. What to Say When Cold Calling for a Job But what should you say when you make that cold call? How exactly should you approach the conversation? We’ve outlined the basic steps to ensure that you can properly prepare for what may be the most importance phone call you’ll ever make: Introduce yourself with an opening statement that can serve as something of an elevator pitch. Try to keep your introduction’s length to no more than 30 seconds and make it concise and understandable. For example: Good afternoon. My name’s John Smith, and I’m following up on a recent communication with your office about potential job opportunities in your department. I’m a graphic design and branding specialist with eleven years in the industry and am extremely interested in joining your company’s design team. Do you have a few minutes right now, or is there a better time to reach you? If your contact has time to talk, then share your qualifications. Don’t just list them either. Talk about your specific areas of expertise and include examples of how you’ve used those skills to add value to your previous employers’ companies. And if your contact is busy right now, try to schedule a day and time to speak. If you lack certain experience or qualifications, create a few quick rebuttals that can overcome those potential objections. Again, try to keep the focus on what you can do for the firm.Close strong and include a follow-up request. Ask if there’s a possibility to meet in person to discuss future opportunities. That’s especially useful if there are no current job opportunities.Always thank the contact for his or her time and be sure to ask whether there’s any additional information you can send to help them in further considerations. You may also want to email a thank you note as well. That’s always a good way to make a great impression â€" and may even help them keep you in mind for future job openings. Finally, don’t limit your cold call efforts to employers. You should also try cold calling network contacts and others, to develop leads on potential jobs. The key is to view cold calling as another tool in your job search toolkit and commit to making them part of your daily job search routine.

Find a Job You Love and Youll Never Work a Day in Your Life

Find a Job You Love and Youll Never Work a Day in Your Life That’s right folks I am going philosophical on you today. As great as the quote from Confucius is, the sad truth is that doing what you love is the dream of many, but the reality of few. I get asked to help people with their job searches, however some people haven’t got a clue what the next job should be, where they are heading and what the longer term plan is. They are currently doing one thing and would consider doing ten different others. This makes it near impossible for me or the person themselves to actually get anywhere with the job search, let alone accepting a job offer down the line when the doubts start kicking in: Establishing clarity: Confucius, the über wise man himself, put the truth down in a nice quote that sounds easy enough. The question is, how do you actually go about finding out what you would love to do? Not even a  career coach can tell you exactly what you should do; it has to come from you. I don’t claim to be an expert on people’s dream careers but there are three simple questions you can ask yourself today and the answers can give you some guidance. Take a few minutes out of your day to think this over and you will have better clarity as a result. Here we go: What is the passion in your life? What would you pay to do? How would you fill your days if you were a millionaire? The answers to these three questions are hopefully somewhat similar and will give you a good indication of what your true calling is. Whatever it may be, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that it is your childhood dream or what you set out to do before you stumbled upon an different path. Your dream will latently follow you for the rest of your life, your choice is whether to pursue it now or run the risk of having serious regrets later on. Let’s say we press on. At this point it may seem like the dream activity is impossible to fill your days with unless you are idle rich. Assuming you dont have that kind of money, your best bet will be to map out what others have done. By modeling others’ path to your dream job, you will have the roadmap ready. Ask yourself the three follow up questions: Does anybody get paid doing this? How could you get paid doing this? What is stopping you? The answer to the final question is usually an amalgamation of excuses such as limiting beliefs, fear of failure, complacency and the all too cozy comfort zone. These objections can all be overcome with clear goals, hard work and belief in yourself. Let’s take some action When you have identified exactly what you want to do, the next step is to research the dream job. What companies or organizations do you target, where are the jobs located, do you need any qualifications, who can you contact that is already doing this? Speak to friends and family, professional contacts, scour Linkedin and the rest of the web for clues. The more research you do, the more fired up you will get. Set some clear objectives and timescales and make sure you take an action every day to edge toward your goal. Get a big wall calendar to fill out your through goals and achievements. This change could be a long process but as long as you are willing to focus on where you are heading, you will get there. Please note that while all great jobs out there are up for grabs, you have to do a reality check and make sure you are not delusional when pursuing your dream. There will be physical and other limitations that are out of your control. There could of course be very valid obstacles such as family situation or your finances; as a rule however, there is always a solution that can be worked out over time. Bottom line In my mind, as soon as you have identified the job you love you should go for it non-stop. Actually taking the decision to pursue your dream can sometimes be harder than achieving it. I say there are only two things you need to get any job; belief in yourself and desire. The rest will somehow take care of itself. Are you doing the job you love? Why or why not? Achieving Sweet Success Interview with Chef Carla Hall - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Achieving Sweet Success Interview with Chef Carla Hall - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I recently caught up with Carla Hall, who is the co-host of ABC Daytime’s lifestyle series, “The Chew,”   seated alongside restaurateurs and “Iron Chef America” stars Mario Batali and Michael Symon, entertaining expert Clinton Kelly, and health and wellness enthusiast Daphne Oz.   She was the   fan favorite former competitor on Bravo’s “Top Chef.” and built her brand winning over audiences with her fun catch phrase “Hootie Hoo” and philosophy to always cook with love. In the below interview, Carla shares her keys for success. Jeff Gabel: From CPA to Runway Model to Chef, what inspired you to take the leap into professional cooking? Carla Hall:  Initially I didn’t know it was going to be food, I was looking for something I wanted to do.   I didn’t know what that was. I started a lunch delivery service and realized I didn’t mind the long days, so I decided to go to culinary school and do it for real and become a professional chef. Gabel:  What advice do you have for amateur home cooks who are thinking about changing their career to pursue cooking professionally? Hall:  I think they shouldn’t jump the gun. Many folks fantasize what they see on television and don’t fully understand the harsh realities of cooking. Don’t change your career before you really understand what you are getting yourself into.   It is a very hard business, I suggest working with a caterer during holidays or working in some shape or form in the business, and exposing yourself to the harshest gory side of it all before you decide. Gabel:  You’ve published a few cookbooks that talk about cooking with love, how do you stay motivated and make sure the pantry always stocked with that key ingredient? Hall:  I really try to always be present. If I’m not in a good mood I just don’t cook.   Whenever you are in a bad mood something is bound to go wrong and you are not going to enjoy it anyway.   Sometimes you don’t have a choice and then you just have to take a minute and check your attitude. Gabel:  You recently launched Carla’s Cookies, where did the idea come from? Hall:  It is an extension of my catering company, and they started off as a joke where clients would go through the buffet line and break a dessert in half and I would get upset â€" I felt like they were wasting my time.   As a joke I made something so small that they couldn’t break it and the natural thing was cookies.   We started doing them for dinner parties and customers started ordering them as Christmas gifts and then when I went on Top Chef All Stars (which I didn’t want to do because it was so hard on the business) I decided to do it so that I could change to the cookies and promote it and then it was so successful that I wound up transitioning full time to Carlas cookies. Gabel:  How did the experience on Top Chef help you build your personal brand? Hall:  You get to know yourself pretty well when you are in a competition.   I learned with the intention of coming from a spiritual place and being centered.   What I thought was normal, actually wasn’t.   It was like telling people to Cook with Love was a reminder, and afterwards that is how people remembered me. It wasn’t intentional, it was just my philosophy that I was voicing and that became my brand. Gabel:  How do you approach Quick Fire challenges in everyday life while juggling multiple ventures? Hall:  I approach it with the attitude that I know I can “get er done” and even if I can’t â€" I never know I can’t get it done until I can’t get it done â€" and that attitude sees me across the finish line almost every time. Gabel:  Who is your role model and how have they inspired you? Hall:  My role model was my grandmother and she is the one who told me that it was my job to be happy.   The first one to say “follow your heart” and that is how I live my life. Gabel:  What has been the sweetest success of your career? Hall:  I have had so many sweet moments, and the Chew is obviously one of them because I get to work with incredible people every day.   Also the guests that are on the Chew are always fantastic.   One of the most special moments was when Gladys Knight was a guest (and I grew up with my mom playing that music for us all of the time), and when she came on the show she gave me a hug and was like “Carla!” and gave me a real tight hug, and I got to dance with her, and it was so wonderful.

Create a strategic job search plan

Create a strategic job search plan Create a strategic job search plan Create a strategic job search plan February 15, 2010 by Career Coach Sherri Thomas 5 Comments The single biggest mistake I see job seekers making is not having a personalized job search strategy. That is, an action plan loaded with websites, companies and people they are going to leverage to land their next career move. Many professionals are simply applying for a few jobs they see on-line, attend a couple of networking events, and then get completely discouraged and say that there aren’t any job openings. The fact is companies are hiring professionals every day. So what shouldn’t one of them by YOU?! The fastest and easiest way to land your next job is to create a personalized job search strategy and then

How to Showcase Your Transferable Skills -

How to Showcase Your Transferable Skills - The most challenging thing about making a career change isn’t always the obvious obstacle. Before stepping off of one career path for another, you may have thought making the time for continuing education in your already busy life would be the toughest part of your career shift. However, many people find it’s equally, if not more difficult, to illustrate why an employer should value their transferable skills. For example, if your entire resume is filled with healthcare experience and you’re now seeking a position in law enforcement, it’s up to you to show the employer how important and relevant the skills you used in the past are for your new target jobs. How can you be sure the employer knows you are perfect for the job? Follow the following advice to help showcase your transferable skills, and no one will question if you are qualified.   Identify your skills. You can’t showcase your transferable skills until you know which the employer will think are the most important. What did you do in your previous positions on a daily basis? Make a list. Once your list is complete, pair skills you used with each task with job descriptions that interest you. Pay special attention to skills you can easily use in different organizations. Don’t ignore your “soft skills,” or emotional intelligence. For example, are you a good communicator? Do you have a knack for leading teams? Maybe you’re a great negotiator. Identify your best skills and include these on your list. Research opportunities. Once you have your lists, plug your skills (your keywords) into job-board search engines to see what types of positions come up. For example, you may include terms such as “supervise,” “oversee projects,” or “leadership” in your searches.  Keep an open mind and look for a pattern or type of job that keeps coming up. Use your target employer’s language to describe your previous experience. You don’t want to make the employer try to figure out what you did in the past. Avoid jargon, abbreviations and other words specific to your old industry. Describe your background, skills, experiences and accomplishments using easy to understand language that relates to what you want to do next. For example, if you were solving problems, managing people and overcoming obstacles in your past job, describe that background in words your new employer will understand and appreciate. Use social media tools to feature your expertise. One of the best things about social media is it allows you to showcase what you know and to communicate that expertise to exponential numbers of people. When you share news and information relevant to your industry, you become a go-to source. People will naturally view you as an expert in your arena, which helps fill in perceived experience gaps. Network all the time. When you’re changing careers, your network is even more important than ever because you may need to rely on someone to take a chance on you. Make an effort to tell people what you’re doing. For example, attend professional networking events and take on volunteer roles. Ideally, you’ll be able to fill a role that uses some of the same skills you’ll need on the job. The best way to showcase your transferable skills is to use those skills with people who can influence your career path. Focus on your transferable skills and put these action tips to use and you’ll discover how much easier it is to land a job in a new industry.
